Edinburgh has long been the capital of Scotland (since 1492). The city stands on volcanic rock, which was shaped by Ice Age glaciers. Every summer, the town springs into life through different festivals such as; the Edinburgh Festival, which includes various art exhibitions, and the Military tattoo.
Edinburgh has a rich cultural history. One of the main attractions is the Edinburgh castle. This castle, built on an extinct volcano, is visible from all parts of the town. This castle played a key role in Scottish history. This is the place where Mary, Queen of Scots, gave birth to James VI of Scotland, who also became James I of England after Elizabeth I died. Today, the castle is famous for its display of the Scottish Regalia. From the castle, the Royal Mile leads to the Holyroodhouse Palace, the Queen's official residence in Scotland. Close by are the Whitehorse Close, the Acheson House and the wax museum.
In the North, you can find the New Town, which was built in the Gregorian style. Here, all streets are arranged in rectangles. Princes Street, which is the boarder between the Old and New Town is the perfect shopping venue.
